John and I planned a little weekend getaway to Fredericksburglast weekend and so I thought I would share in case you are looking for a place to go for a getaway also. We absolutely LOVED it there. Fredericksburg is such a cute town in the Hill Country of Texasthat is known for it’s German heritage, cute shops, and amazing wineries!

Where We Stayed:

We stayed in the CUTEST little house less than a minute away from Main Street ( AKA where all the food/shops are!) It was the perfect location and size for John and I ( plus our two pups- they even have pet-friendly rentals!)

We booked Abigail’s cottage through Gastehaus Schmidt Lodging Service and couldn’t have been more pleased! They were SO easy to work with, super nice, and help you find a rental or bed and breakfast that fit your needs. Jessica, the owner, even gave us awesome recommendations on places to eat, what wineries to visit, and must see shops in the area!

How cute is this cottage?! This entire street was filled with adorable homes. The area felt super quaint and was such a relaxing place to be.Below is a quick tour of the rest of the house. It had an awesome living room to hang out in ( with a fireplace,) there was a full kitchen, dining area, and 2 bedrooms. Outside even had a hot tub!

John wanted me to tell you all that the bed and PILLOWS ( he is really big on pillows and has to sleep with four-five just for himself) were extremely comfortable. In this picture he actually stole my pillow!

Anyone else totally geek out when they get to sign the guest book? I LOVE doing that and totally over analyze what I should write each time. Plus I love reading what other people loved about the place too.

PS: How appropriate is this shirt? I totally have to make this vow every year in the fall. haha! I thought this shirt was too cute. It was one of the things I bought out shopping on Main Street.

Where We Ate:

The first morning we had breakfast at Sunset Grill and it was delish! This should be a must for breakfast on your visit! Another place we tried for Breakfast was the Old German Bakery ( it is over on main street.) It was super packed, and for good reason, the German pancakes are SO good and it was HUGE- it was literally draping over the sides of a very large plate.

weekend getaway to fredericksburg, texas hill country, travel, fredericksburg travel guide, winery,

We stumbled upon RathSkeller and decided to go there for lunch. It was not on any of the blogs I read or recommend by anyone, but man oh man it was so good. And to top it off I overheard the table next to us asking the server about how it was haunted, so of course I asked and she said that they had a long history of crazy things happening in the restaurant, because it used to be an old hospital for the town! Yep creepy, but in a cool way haha! We got the lunch special, which was a lavender and cheese ravioli. I wish I could eat that meal again, like right this very moment.

weekend getaway to fredericksburg, texas hill country, travel, fredericksburg travel guide, winery,

For dinner we went to The Auslander. This is basically the best place on main strip that offers the best German dinner experience and has been featured on a couple food/travel shows. There are several nicer restaurants along Main Street, but I was starving and didn’t feel like going home to change, so we opted for a more casual place. Other places that were recommended to us were Hondo’s, Otto’s and Vaudeville.

Wineries:

Several of my friends recommend the 290 Wine Shuttle. I am so glad we did this! They take you to all the wineries and you just hop on and off. They have shuttles every 15 minutes. You can see the full list of wineries they stop at on their website. The buses were very nice and were air conditioned, plus no drinking and driving!

Where we went:

  1. Baron’s Creek Vineyards– this one was my absolute favorite! The grounds are so beautiful. This was our first stop and I wish we would have stayed their all day.
  2. Becker Vineyards Honestly, John and I were both super disappointed in this one. But that was mostly our fault, because we didn’t realize there is a beautiful outdoor patio with fields of beautiful flowers to see. Instead we did our wine tasting at a really crowded bar and it felt like was 5,000 degrees in there. So, if you go – make sure you sit outside! hah! There were a ton of people who were sitting outside having picnics and drinking wine!
  3. Four Point Cellars – I really liked this winery. It has a really neat outdoor sitting area and there was live music playing.
  4. Wedding Oak Winery – This winery was not whatI was expecting at all. When you pull up it says ” wild seed farm” and it was basically a nursery. There was a ton of flowers and pumpkins everywhere. You walked through the nursey and there were some shops, a general store, and a cute little winery in the back.

Next time we go, I definitely want to make it you to Grape Creek Vineyards. We drove through it, but the vineyard won’t allow the shuttles to drop off after 12:00, but the outside of the vineyard looked beautiful.

The only thing we didn’t have time for was to hike to enchanted rock, it’s only about 20 minutes outside of the city. On our next trip, I am definitely making time for this! I have heard it is beautiful. Everyone says to get there early if you plan on going.

I also want to thank Gastehaus Schmidt Lodging Service for partnering with us on this post and allowing us to stay in the cutest cottage ever! As always, John and I would never recommend a place to you that we didn’t absolutely love – and we seriously loved staying at Abigail’s cottage and working with Gastehaus Schmidt Lodging Service!

Tents were set up all around market street with food and different wines to try. I am not a wine expert by any means, so this was super fun to try new types of wine that I would normally never try and to hear the experts explain the differences.

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be back blogging today. After being sick for the last two weeks, I finally have energy and am starting to feel like myself again. So, jumping back in with another style post!

Little Black Dress

Make up by Jessica Kirkland

Let’s take a second to talk about the star of the show – this (c/o )DRESS! Makes me feel like Sandy from Grease. ( I think it is the way the top of it fits.) Sadly, it is no longer available but Francesca’s has SOOO many other cute ones. I am also loving this gorgeous option from Francesca’s in white.

I also wanted to share some big, small, and random life updates with you guys to explain why we haven’t posted as much lately and what has been on our minds.

John decided around the holidays that it was time for him to step down from his position and leave his current job. His last day was December 31st. Honestly, we were both so scared and nervous. We knew it was the right decision, but he didn’t have anything lined up! It was a huge leap of faith, that ended in the biggest blessing. John was only out of work for a couple weeks and started his new job in mid- January. Then he had to go to Dallas for a month long work training. For the whole month, he would drive home on Friday from Dallas and we would have Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon and he would turn back and drive back to Dallas. With such a crazy schedule, John has had to take a step back from the blog the last couple months while he transitioned.

With John not as active on the blog, I honestly completely wore myself out trying to keep up the pace for the both of us. I work full time also, and definitely couldn’t handle my work load ( this is our busy time of the year at work,) the blog, and my fitness goals I set for myself this year.

While all of this was going on, we had serious car problems! Y’all, 2017 started out super rough. With the stress of John’s job/ car problems, trying to juggle it all, I found myself starting to burn out, which then lead to me comparison, lack of vision, and guilt for not giving 100% here. Then I went to Thrive Creative Conference 2 weeks ago and refueled my well a little. It is so refreshing to be surrounded by other creatives, bloggers, and small business owners. Their passion was contagious.

I was so ready, to get back to it! Then things happened. One, I got super sick and am literally just now recovering after almost 2 weeks! & also, John and I decided to finally part with our couch. Which in all honestly, even farther derailed us! This new couch is heavenly!! On a plus side though, I have gotten caught up on all my TV shows and even started a few new ones.

Whew, okay! I tell you all of this, because John and I always want to be real and up front with all of you. We struggle, we lose motivation, we, okay mostly just me, binge watch hours of This is Us on demand and put all of our responsibilities on hold. I truly believe there are seasons of life when life is just HARD and you have to just cut yourself some slack and give yourself permission to slow down, refill your cup, and then just get back to it!! We took a break and it allowed us to remember what our vision for Our Messy Table is. Lately, I have been posting more style and beauty posts here, which I love, but originally this was a place for John and I to share our projects, recipes, home décor and married life. While I still plan on sharing outfits and things I love, I want to get back to our roots and make sure we are sharing more of the projects that keep our table a mess.

If you stuck with me this long, thank you! Sorry for all the rambling. I hope this post helps you if you have felt like you aren’t measuring up or reaching your goals lately. It happens to us all!

Thanks so much for stopping by! We can’t tell you how much we appreciate you all.

I am so thankful for these two girls! As you grow older, friendships are hard to come by. It isn’t as easy as it used to be when we were in high school and college and you were surrounded by your friends every day. When you find your #squad – the people in your life who love you, encourage you, and dream with you it takes effort and work to keep those relationships, but it is so worth it.

I honestly hadn’t celebrated Galentine’s before thisand now I am wondering whyyyyyy not?!I mean, a holiday that you get to get all dolled up in cute dresses, go tobrunch, hang out, drink champagne, have sweets or even schedule a photoshoot with your girls – count me in every year!

friends, friendship, valentine's, galentine's, vday, community, blogger, squad, tribe, francesca's, valentine's dress ideas, red lace dress for valentine's,

As much as I love makingGalentine’s a big celebration with my gal pals, I also think we should strive to celebrate our friends all year long. I know with work and family etc. friendships tend to be the thing that gets shoved off to the side. So, I wanted to share a couple ways I try ( again, try – I am not perfect and totally am the first to admit, I can get too wrapped up in what I have going on in my own life) and celebrate my friendships during the year even with a busy schedule.

  1. Mani/pedi – Anytime I go get my nails done, I always send a quick text to a friend to see if they are in as desperate need as I am. I know not all of your friends may live close by, but at least the ones that do, I try and just see if they have a free hour. Knocks something off my to-do list and I get to relax and chat with a friend!
  2. Coffee Dates- It is no secret, I love coffee and coffee shops. So, if I have a morning or an evening I need to get a couple things done and am going to go to Starbucks, I send out a no pressure text to let them know I’ll be at the bucks if they wanna stop by and hang out or even work! ( Helps that these two girls are also bloggers, which means there is always something to be done and it is nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of!)
  3. Brunch- Even if it is just once a month or every two months – set up a brunch with your girlfriends. Try a new place or go to an old favorite, whatever it maybe you will always leave feeling so fulfilled.
  4. Girl’s night-I need to plan another one! My last one was so much fun. In December some of the girls came over and we made Christmas bows ( here is a video of how to do one, you can actually use it for any occasion and not just Christmas!) So grab a bottle of wine or even these Cotton Candy Cocktails and have a fun girl’s night!
  5. Snail Mail- This is great for the friends you can’t see all the time, but really want them to know you are thinking of them! I need to start doing this again. Last year, I made a goal to sit down and send out a couple cards once a month to family and friends.
  6. Set Reminders- I try and set reminders in my phone when I know a friend has something important going on in their life. Whether it is a birthday, stressful meeting with their boss, ultrasound appointment etc. anytime they mention something like that to me, I try and write it down and set a reminder to touch base with them and to pray for whatever it is.
  7. Be encouraging-A little encouragment goes a long way. Even if you don’t understand what your friend is going through, would have handled a situation differently, or maybe they have a dream that you just can’t even begin to understand. Despite whatever you are feeling about it, be that person that can be happy and encouraging for them and take an interest in your friend’s lives!

January was my month to plan, so I chose Jasper's in Market Street - The Woodlands! ( I set the bar high, so that he had to plan something spectacular for February, aka my birthday month haha!)]]> Another one of our goals for 2017 is to have a monthly date night! This can’t just be a spur of the moment dinner or a let’s rent a movie ( though don’t get me wrong, I love a good pizza and Netflix kinda night!) We both felt it was important to actually plan a nice date for each other. We decided in December that we would rotate month’s and the other person would be in charge of planning out the date. January was my month to plan, so I chose Jasper’s in Market Street – The Woodlands! ( I set the bar high, so that he had to plan something spectacular for February, aka my birthday month haha!)

Before we get started, of course, I had to show you what I wore! We went on a late Sunday afternoon, so I chose something cute, but a little more on the casual side. This sweatshirt dress is SO soft and comfortable and the rose embroidery dressed it up just the right amount.

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

We sat in this gorgeous inside patio room with big windows that over looked the center of Market Street. It was just beautiful andJohn was so happy, because the Manager, Robert, put the Packers vs. Cowboy game on for him. It totally made John’s night – that and seeing Packers win! (GO PACK GO!)

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

For drinks I had white wine and John highly recommends the Midnight Express. He said it tasted like an adult vanilla latte.

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

If you like blue cheese, then you absolutely HAVE to try the blue cheese potato chips! OMG words can’t even describe how good these are.

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

As our appetizer we also tried the crab cakes because John is obsessed with any and all crab cakes. Now we are not food critics but we watch a lot of Top Chef and Chopped so I believe in 2017 that qualifies us in some capacity to critique these crab cakes lol. All I can say is that we ate all of it. And that while the breading was different from any crab cake we have ever had it was a welcomed change as well was the jicama salad that shared the plate, but the real star here was the poblano cream sauce that was under the crab. It was heavenly! The Verdict? Definitely order them.

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

This place does a wedge right! LETMETELLYA! John and I split the wedge salad – this is just my portion. & they added an onion ring. It was like they saw right into my little foodie heart with the addition of that onion ring, y’all.

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

Only two words – SOOOOOOO GOOD. PS: this picture of John, seriously cracks me up. He always makes the craziest expressions when I try and take his pic! hah!

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

By this point, we were already starting to get full! We split the full slab of ribs. Jasper’s ribs were voted top 3 by Bon Appetit’s for “America’s Best Ribs.” So of course with an award like that you have to try them right?

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

The potatoes with this dish were hands down the best thing I ate the entire night. It was my absolute favorite. Potatoes are my jam and these potatoes played a rock concert with every bite.

On to Dessert! We may have decided try all three of these! (Don’t judge) The Manager said these are the 3 best sellers. The bread pudding with vanilla ice-cream, lemon tarte, and butterfinger creme brulee.

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

John’s favorite!

My Favorite!

date night at Jasper's, date night, dinner date, married life, married date ideas, market street the woodlands,

In the end we would recommend Jasper’s to you for a great night out on the town or for a romantic date night. It’s right in the heart of Market Street, it has great atmosphere, a wide drink selection and the food is fantastic. Did we mention that the Chef/Owner Kent Rathbun beat Bobby Flay on Iron Chef? Google it. I would love to know if you have any awesome date night suggestions for restaurants or activities around the Houston area that would be fun for the next date I plan in March!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend!

So, if you are like me and have had the crappiest week and would just rather be lounging at The Westin right about now - then your week just got way better! John and I are Thrive Ambassadors and this year the Thrive Creative Conference is going to be held at The Westin at The Woodlands hotel on February 24-26th! Thrive has partnered with The Westin to giveaway a 1 night's stay and dinner for 2 to one of you! (Totally jealous, I wish I could enter! haha!)]]> Hey y’all! Happy Thursday! It has been a crazzzyyyy week for John and I! John had to be in Dallas all week and he accidentally took my car key with him! Then he overnighted the key and of course, with my luck, UPS lost it ( insert ALL the crying emoji’s!) Now it will take 8-10 days for a package investigation and then they will file a claim on it. So, basically I have to get a new key made! Which honestly, I should do that anyway, because we don’t have a spare. Bigthanks tomy Momwho saved the day! I have been joking with her all week that she is my Mouber (Mom/Uber) She drove me all over town this week: to and from work, to lunch, to dinner, to the mall, to get our nails/toes done haha! I don’t know what I would have done without her.

Bullet Journal Guide http://www.ourmessytable.com/bullet-journal-guide/ http://www.ourmessytable.com/bullet-journal-guide/#respond Tue, 10 Jan 2017 16:53:34 +0000 http://www.ourmessytable.com/?p=3904 What is this Bullet Journal craze and how can you use it to make 2017 your best year yet?!]]> Every year when it comes to picking out my yearly planner I kinda feel like Goldylocks: no this one is to small, no this one doesn’t have enough margin, oh wait this one is juuust right!! And even then I know I am compromising, because it isn’t excactly what I want it to be. So what is a person to do? Well like most people,I turned to the “google machine” and found this awesome way to plan my days and it’s called Bullet Journaling. Anyone heard of it? If you have just pretend to be that friend who listens to your story even when they have heard it before, because you are an awesome human. (side note, always strive to be awesome) And if you haven’t heard of it then you, my friend, are in for a treat, because a bullet journal is pure gold! How does it work you ask? What is it you ask? Ok, I’ll tell you.

OMT Guide to a Bullet Journal

First, to totally understand and grasp the wonderfulness that is Bullet Journaling you need to know this one thing. Bullet Journaling is simply a fully customizable system for organizing your life. It is best decribed by it’s creator Ryder Carroll. He will give you the basics, but you have the freedom to make it your own.

Materials:

  • The setup to get started is pretty simple. All you really need is a journal. I like the Leuchtturm Notebook A5 Medium Dotted Navy Blue, but any journal will work. The Leuchtturm also has lined pages or blank pages, again I prefer the dotted.
  • A pen.
  • For added flare you can use markers or colored pencils.

bullet journal

A nice added feature of the Leuchtturm is the double bookmark.

double bookmarks

Index:

The index allows you an easy way to keep track of everything you put into your journal and assures that you can quickly find whatever you are looking for. If your bullet journal does not have page numbers you will want to make sure that you add them. The Key page is equally important to help distinguish different notes and tasks within your journal.

key log

Future Log:

The future log is for the long term game plan. It allows you to see ahead and plan far in advance. I use mine for things like vacations, trips, holidays, birthdays or events like weddings or conferences.

future log

Monthly Overview:

This overview is for you to be able to create a “month at a glance” page or a birdseye view of your month. I have a monthly tasks list that gives me all of my action items for that month. I also make space for birthdays, holidays, big appointments and events that will be taking up my nights or weekends. My monthly view also has a habit tracker that that keeps me accountable to the things I said I wanted to improve in my life this year.

monthly overview

Weekly/Daily Pages:

These pages are where the rubber meets the road. This is where you take all of the action items from the monthly view and plug them into when you will accomplish them. For me I do this everynight before bed and this gives me a great setup for how I will attack my day when I wake up. It’s better if you don’t set up your daily pages way ahead of time, because you never know how much space you will need for each day so just create them as you go.

weekly pages

Extras:

In the bullet journal community these are called “collections” and they can be whatever your little heart desires. It could be “books you want to read” or “trip ideas” or “food recipes” to name a few. These pages can be whatever you want them to be. The customizable piece of the bullet journal is my favorite aspect to it.

Here is a link to our Bullet JournalPinterest board that has tons of other pages to get your creativity flowing.

Having a Bullet Journal has been huge for both Lindsey and I and our ability to not only keep our thoughts together, but also stay organized with so many different things going on in our world. I hope that you find this to be a joy in your life and if you have any other questions about how we journal or additional tips don’t be a stranger and ask away. This is just the beginning of what will be a great 2017!

Keep it Messy friends.

Happy Wednesday! With 2017 creeping up, I decided to pick a word to describe what I want to strive towards this year. I chose BOLD. I am not bold by nature and tend to dwell, overthink, and worry about every.little.thing. I want 2017 to be a bold year for me – where I take chances, allow myself to dream, and as weird as it sounds wear bolder lipstick.

In order to feel confident enough to wear the bolder lipstick, I used Smile Brilliant teeth whitening trays to whiten my teeth and rid me of the years of coffee stains. I am SO impressed with this company and how well it works. I have always been very self-conscious about my teeth looking yellow andI havetried a ton of other at home teeth whiteningproducts, but this one was hands-down the best I have tried. They custom make your teeth whitening trays, which is amazing, because I have tried the ones you make at home ( where you put the tray in hot water and try and mold it) and they do not work very well at all. They send you exact instructions on how to make your mold and then you send it back to them and in about a week they send you your customized teeth whitening trays. One problem I had with other products was that the gel would slip out of the impression, but since these are custom to fit my teeth, I didn’t have that problem at all. The fit was very comfortable too and made it easy to do other things around the house while I was whitening my teeth. If you have sensitive teeth and are worried about the gel bothering you, it also comes with a desensitizing gel. This video shows you everything that comes in the kit!

I used my trays about 3 nights a week forabout an hour before bed. Here is my before and after pictures. I still havea couple more usesto go, before I just maintain the results, but I was still very impressed with how far it has come in such a short amount of time. & I love that I don’t have to cut back on my coffee & tea, because seriously, that is what fuels me LOL. You can use coupon code Ourmessytable5 for 5% off your purchase!

On another note, since my goal is to bolder in life this year I thought I would share one of my bold goals for 2017 with you. I want to start vlogging and filming youtube videos! ahhh! I am terrified and excited all at the same time. One of the fun/exhausting things about being a blogger is that there is always something new to learn and tackle. You don’t ever stop learning. So, we are going all in! You can check out our very first video tutorial here, showing how to make the perfect Christmas bow. We obviously still have a lot of things to learn, but being bold requires us to just go for it! So here we go!

I’d love to hear what your goals are for 2017 and also any bolder lipstick recommendations you may have!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Thank you to Smile Brilliant for partnering with us on this post. As always opinions are 100% my own.

Let’s Binge Watch Something http://www.ourmessytable.com/lets-binge-watch-something/ http://www.ourmessytable.com/lets-binge-watch-something/#comments Thu, 28 Jul 2016 07:12:03 +0000 http://www.ourmessytable.com/?p=2666 John and I are HUGE movie/tv show fans! In all honesty, we watch a wholeeeee lot of TV in our spare time. My favorite thing to do is kick back on a Saturday, cuddle up on the couch with John and the pups, and binge watch TV all day long. I know, I know - there are SO many other productive things I could be doing, but I enjoy TV and I enjoy that John and I like to do that together. It is also a way I can disconnect from my job, blogging, and social media. And when done well, great shows pull you into even greater stories and for a couple hours you may be caught up in the love triangle between Lucas, Peyton, and Brooke, having coffee at Central Perk, or wondering who the girl with the yellow umbrella is. (Can anyone relate? And if you know those references, we for sure would be best friends!]]> John and I are HUGE movie/tv show fans! In all honesty, we watch a wholeeeee lot of TV in our spare time. Let’s Binge Watch Something

Last weekend webinge watched every Fast and the Furious movie! Mostly because we have a guest(seen in this post) staying with us this month and he had NEVER seen them. WHHHHATTTT??? I don’t even know how that is possible, but we couldn’t let him leave until he watched all seven of them! (he loved them btw!)

Before we start listing our favorite shows to binge watch, the setup has to be perfect. And by setup I mean the temperature in the house has to be set low, the lights turned out, you need an overabundance of pillows and blankets and most of all….Snacks. We thought we would share some of our favorite binge watching snacks. Popcornopolis is our FAVORITE popcorn. We found them once at a Bucee’s (best gas station ever located in Texas) and now we always stop there just to get the cupcake popcorn flavor.

But looking online we saw that they also have a ton of other flavors that we wanted to try out. We got a little crazy and tried the Peanut Butter Cup, Cheddar Cheese, and Cinnamon Bun. Each one is extremely delicious and addicting. You know what they say “Once you POP(cornopolis), you can’t stop.” If that’s not a real saying it should be.

Now that you have basically created a cave with turning the lights out, getting pillows and blankets, getting the air just right and gathering your snacks,… let’s binge watch something! I love movies, but I am more into TV shows. So, I will be covering all my favorite TV shows. (in no particular order, because I. JUST. CAN’T put that kinda of pressure on myself to rank them hah! It would be like asking who your favorite child was, sure you may have one, but you sure as heck won’t say it out loud. They are all so GOOD, so I had to majorly condense this list – because we would be here for YEARS and we would rather be spending that time watching TV instead of listing.

  1. Sons of Anarchy
  2. Game of Thrones
  3. The Walking Dead
  4. Grey’s Anatomy
  5. Gilmore Girls
  6. Friends
  7. The Vampire Diaries
  8. Prison Break (ONLY Season 1)
