Bring on the beach, fish tacos, snow cones, and in my case all the stripes! My go-to Summer trend is always stripes. It never fails, it is just what I gravitate towards in the Summer. This dress totally fits my Summer criteria. It has the cutest stripes and drawstring waist, which makes it super flattering! It is the perfect dress to just throw on and it instantly looks cute, but without having to put in a lot of effort (insert the praise hands emoji!) plus, I love that it can be worn with sandals or wedges! ]]> Happy Friday! This has been the craziest and most exhausting week that I have had in awhile, but there is a light at the end of my tunnel, because this weekend is a long weekend. & We will be able to kick back and relax a bit! To fully enjoy this holiday weekend and to kick off summer, John and I are headed down to Galveston to go to the beach and to stroll along the strand. And how can I start a new season without a new Summeroutfit?! That’s how I came across this adorable dress from Plum Boutique. It will be so cute for a day full of shopping at the strand, coffee at Mod, and lunch at The Spot (they have the BEST fish tacos!) and this girl is a sucker for fish tacos!

Summer is Here!

I love Summer time!

I paired this dress with my favorite earrings – they go with everything and come in a ton of colors! For this look, I decided to keep the colors neutral, but it would also be really cute with a pop of color! ( I also bought these earrings in peach!)

For a more laid back summer accessory, how cute is this hat?!? Does it not just scream lazy summer afternoons? This is going to be part of my Summer uniform, that’s for sure. I think I am also going to need thisone and this onetoo!

Dress | Shoes | Earrings

To share a little back story with you, last year we went to Waco and made a stop into Spice Village. ( If you haven’t been, it is totally worth the trip!) I went in looking specifically for Plum Boutique. Spice Village is jam-packed with so many boutiques – as I was walking through, I was instantly drawn to this one area. They had adorable clothes, home decor, wall art, etc. it was totally my kinda store and then I see the sign that it was Plum Boutique -the boutique, I had been looking for! I have been a huge fan of their’s ever since that trip, so when they reached out to me to work with them, it totally made my day. I always only share things with you that I love and this case is no different. This is a shop that I shop at and absolutely love.

I’d love to hear what your go-to Summer staples are and also if you have any fish taco spot recs, send them my way!

Thank you so much to Plum Boutique for partnering with me on this post! As always, opinions are my own.

I have to say, John was a trooper! I am definitely lucky that he actually doesn’t mind shopping with me haha & that Francesca’s was having one of their amazing sales buy 1 get another item 50% off ! John of course spent a lot of time looking at the coffee mugs and ended up getting this one for his Mom for Mother’s Day! (Hopefully, she won’t read this haha!)

Spring Cleaning http://www.ourmessytable.com/spring-cleaning/ http://www.ourmessytable.com/spring-cleaning/#respond Sun, 30 Apr 2017 22:55:09 +0000 http://www.ourmessytable.com/?p=4517 ]]> This time every year I get into a major Spring cleaning frenzy. Even though the house has been cluttered all year, I always seem to pick Spring to just finally give in and want to clean out every nook and cranny of the house. This year though is a little bit different. Since January, I have been reading a ton about decluttering my life and how it goes beyond just your home. The past couple months I have started focusing on “Spring Cleaning” up my life and while it does take a conscious effort each day, I wanted to share some of the things that have worked for me lately.

Spring Cleaning

Top (no longer available, but I love thisthis one too from Francescas!) |Lipstick | Necklace from Kendra Scott

Home:

 • Start small. I tend to think about EVERY tiny little thing that needs to be done, but start small and think about one thing you can do this week. This week my goal is to clean out my nightstand. I don’t even understand where all the junk in there has come from!
 • Move winter clothes out of your closet.I like to move my winter clothes into the spare bedroom closet and just see the clothes that are in season. This is a good time also, to take note of what you didn’t wear this year and decide if you still even want it! I do this twice a year and it helps me get rid of clothes I no longer wear. Totally Optional, but I also like to get matching plastic hangers. I can’t stand the wire ones! They drive me crazy. This small thing, just makes the closet feel more put together and organized!
 • Fresh flowers and a new candle helps too!

Inbox:

 • My inbox was stressing me out. I have had the same email for over 7 years and had subscribed to a crazy amount of junk. I found the unroll.me app (ps: it is free!) and have unsubscribed to 187 junk email subscriptions!

Photos:

 • Y’all, I have an addiction. I have over 11,000 photos on my phone! ( Since I wrote this rough draft of this post last month, I somehow managed to add another 1,000. – told ya, I had a problem!) This is something that I have not actually fixed yet, but am working on it! I did take time to go in and create albums on my phone/ computer to help me organize them better. Do y’all have any solutions for this? I’d love some help!
 • This is on my to-do list, but I do have a DIY in the works to actually make me display my pictures instead of keep them stored on my phone to hardly ever be looked at. Anyone else have this problem?

Take Better Care of Yourself:

I am sooo guilty of running myself into the ground. Overcommitting, staying up way too late, eating terribly, and then I end up so worn out that I literally waste an entire weekend on the couch which creates a cycle of feeling guilty etc. etc. repeat. repeat. I reached my breaking point around January and realized I needed to take time to slow down and take better care of myself. Here are just a couple things I have been trying and focusing on.

 • Dance class – I started taking a jazz class once a week! It is so challenging and fun. It has been over 10 years since I last danced! Find something you love to do and block out an hour a week to do it. Taking this one hour a week for myself has seriously made me a happier person.
 • Fill your well – I recently read a book that told you to take 5 minutes to write down a list of things that bring you joy. It can be literally be something bigger, like traveling, or even something smaller like enjoying your coffee on the patio in the mornings or going to the zoo. I wrote down around 10-12 things that truly bring me joy. The author of the book then asked, what would your life look like if you found a way to incorporate at least one of these things into your life each day, even if for just five minutes. Believe me, I totally get it! Some days I wish I had five minutes to spare, but I have really been trying lately to add little things here and there, because ultimately I have realized that these things bring me joy, which makes me happier.
 • Try a new recipe – I have been perusing some of my favorite food bloggers blogs lately and picking at least one new recipe to try. I make it on Sundays, that way I can enjoy the process and not feel rushed during the week. This week I choose this Honey Garlic ChickenHoney Garlic Chickenrecipe. SOOOO GOOD. It was definitely a winner.
 • Drinking more water
 • What can you take off your to-do list that is taking up time, but doesn’t add value? – This was huge for me. I realized that I was setting unrealistic expectations of myself to accomplish SO MANY tasks that really didn’t NEED to be done right now/if at all. Once I took some of those off, delegated a few, and even though it was hard – I had to say no to some commitments that were just too much for me right now. It means that I don’t go to EVERY event and that I know that I need time to myself. Look over your calendar/ to-do list and if you are feeling overwhelmed, see what you can take a step back from.

Hope these help! These are just some things I have been doing and trying to keep focused on that I feel like have helped me the last couple months.

Thank y’all for stopping by!

We had such a great time on our little mini vacation. Lafayette is a small town with so much character. We went into their ” down town” and had breakfast at The French Press ( PS: try the Praline bacon – it will change your life!) If you are from Texas though, be prepared for them to make fun of the way you say it haha!

floral dress & Lafayette Trip Recap, Floral Dress, Madewell, spring, spring trends, dress,

My favorite place from the entire trip was The Lab Handcrafted Coffees & Comforts. They put soft serve ice cream in your coffeeeeee! I am still craving it. I feel bad for all my future cups of coffee that will never be able to live up to that one. If you try it, make sure to walk around the cute neighborhood while you enjoy it. You will find the cutest homes with SO MUCH CHARACTER and plenty of photo op’s. (PS: that is where all these pictures were taken. I kept hoping people wouldn’t walk out while I was awkwardlyposing on their front porches.)

I decided to wear some strappy sandals to make the dress more casual for drinks/dancing out on the patio, but it would also be really cute with wedges or heels. It was super comfortable ( literally, at 28, I now don’t buy anything that isn’t comfortable), lightweight, and I just adore the feminine floral pattern.

While we were there, we also did The Escape Room. Have y’all tried that? It is SO fun. Unfortunately, we figured out the code and were 15 seconds too late. Literally, she walked in as we were yelling out the code! It was so much harder than I thought it would be though. They put extra items in the room to distract you and it totally works.

Hope you are all having a great week! John will be making an appearance on the blog here in the next day or two sharing another delicious recipe. Woo Hoo!

Hope you all had a great weekend. I feel like John and I did ALL the things this weekend! (Anyone else have a crazy productive weekend?!) After cleaning, organizing, meal prepping, and shooting two new projects for the blog - we somehow even had time to swing into our new favorite store, Philanthropy, over in Market Street - The Woodlands. (Anyone else have a crazy productive weekend?!) After cleaning, organizing, meal prepping, and shooting two new projects for the blog – we somehow even had time to swing into our new favorite store, Philanthropy, over in Market Street – The Woodlands. If you live in The Woods, you gotta go check it out!

Philanthropy

The moment I stepped into this store I knew it was different and it had nothing to do with the decor, even though that is spectacular too! The difference is the two amazing owners, Jackie and Christine and the culture that have created there.. Within 2 seconds of being in the store John and I were greeted by a welcoming “Hey! How are yall today? I’m Jackie.” as he extended his hand for a handshake. When the heck does that happen? lol. He then proceeded to tell the story of Philanthropy as he personally showed us around. Then he said, “You want to see my favorite part?” As I thought, probably gonna be some section about cool mancave home decor ( for John) or a specific area for his favorite product. Nope. Not even close. It was a space in the middle of the store that didn’t have anything for you to buy, called The Chapel. In this space you can write out your prayer request and hang them to the prayer wall. The truly amazing part, is that the staff prays for them every day. EVERYDAY! And that people can even take one home to pray for it if they feel lead too. Y’all, this blew me away! The wall was completely full of people who had written prayer requests and it was just a visual reminder of all the people in my town that are asking for prayer and praising the Lord.

In a noisy retail world that is looking to take as much as it can from its customers, this store and it’s ownership stand out because they choose to give back 10% to charity. What a concept! They also have the cutest t-shirts that 100% of each t-shirt go to a specific charity as well.

Okay, besides all that amazingness, they also have super cute home decor, nicknacks, devotionals and clothes! I got this blue and white top off the shoulder top that is so soft and lightweight for Spring! I couldn’t find on the website, but here is another one that is similar. I also picked up a couple unique home decor items that I will share with y’all soon!

I hope y’all all have a great week! If you stop into Philathrophy, let me know what you think of it! And if you want to know more about Jackie and Christine and their story, their is a bio page on the website.

Thanks for stopping by!

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be back blogging today. After being sick for the last two weeks, I finally have energy and am starting to feel like myself again. So, jumping back in with another style post!

Little Black Dress

Make up by Jessica Kirkland

Let’s take a second to talk about the star of the show – this (c/o )DRESS! Makes me feel like Sandy from Grease. ( I think it is the way the top of it fits.) Sadly, it is no longer available but Francesca’s has SOOO many other cute ones. I am also loving this gorgeous option from Francesca’s in white.

I also wanted to share some big, small, and random life updates with you guys to explain why we haven’t posted as much lately and what has been on our minds.

John decided around the holidays that it was time for him to step down from his position and leave his current job. His last day was December 31st. Honestly, we were both so scared and nervous. We knew it was the right decision, but he didn’t have anything lined up! It was a huge leap of faith, that ended in the biggest blessing. John was only out of work for a couple weeks and started his new job in mid- January. Then he had to go to Dallas for a month long work training. For the whole month, he would drive home on Friday from Dallas and we would have Friday evening thru Sunday afternoon and he would turn back and drive back to Dallas. With such a crazy schedule, John has had to take a step back from the blog the last couple months while he transitioned.

With John not as active on the blog, I honestly completely wore myself out trying to keep up the pace for the both of us. I work full time also, and definitely couldn’t handle my work load ( this is our busy time of the year at work,) the blog, and my fitness goals I set for myself this year.

While all of this was going on, we had serious car problems! Y’all, 2017 started out super rough. With the stress of John’s job/ car problems, trying to juggle it all, I found myself starting to burn out, which then lead to me comparison, lack of vision, and guilt for not giving 100% here. Then I went to Thrive Creative Conference 2 weeks ago and refueled my well a little. It is so refreshing to be surrounded by other creatives, bloggers, and small business owners. Their passion was contagious.

I was so ready, to get back to it! Then things happened. One, I got super sick and am literally just now recovering after almost 2 weeks! & also, John and I decided to finally part with our couch. Which in all honestly, even farther derailed us! This new couch is heavenly!! On a plus side though, I have gotten caught up on all my TV shows and even started a few new ones.

Whew, okay! I tell you all of this, because John and I always want to be real and up front with all of you. We struggle, we lose motivation, we, okay mostly just me, binge watch hours of This is Us on demand and put all of our responsibilities on hold. I truly believe there are seasons of life when life is just HARD and you have to just cut yourself some slack and give yourself permission to slow down, refill your cup, and then just get back to it!! We took a break and it allowed us to remember what our vision for Our Messy Table is. Lately, I have been posting more style and beauty posts here, which I love, but originally this was a place for John and I to share our projects, recipes, home décor and married life. While I still plan on sharing outfits and things I love, I want to get back to our roots and make sure we are sharing more of the projects that keep our table a mess.

If you stuck with me this long, thank you! Sorry for all the rambling. I hope this post helps you if you have felt like you aren’t measuring up or reaching your goals lately. It happens to us all!

Thanks so much for stopping by! We can’t tell you how much we appreciate you all.

So, you have no idea how excited I am to finally be able to blog about it! First things first, the true talent here is Jessica from Makeup by Jessica Kirkland. She is a Houston-based Makeup Artist and man is she talented! Fun fact: I actually went to high school with her and hadn’t seen her in 10 years until she came to do my makeup! ( wow, I suddenly feel SUPER old.) Anyways, it was a blast to have my makeup done by her and she shared some super awesome makeup & beauty tips that I wanted to pass along to you guys!

Makeup Tips from Jessica Kirkland

She did a soft, romantic date night makeup look and I am sharing exactly what products she used below. Won’t even lie, I went and bought most of them afterwards, because I love this look SO much!

Face:

Jumping right in, she started with my face.

Tip #1 – Jessica doesn’t use primer, because it can create a barrier. Instead, she just uses a moisturizer! It was refreshing to hear that, because who wants to spend $20-30 on primer – Not ME! I did ask her what kind and she said that when doing clients makeup, she uses the Sephora brand moisturizer, because she said it is good for most skin types and she personally uses the Algenist lighting and firming moisturizer. ( Shegets hers from jet.com and said it literally half the price!)

Tip #2: Mix a little of the liquid illuminator into your foundation and then apply for an all over glow! (I loved the way this turned out and went to Ulta the next day to pick it up.)

After she put the foundation on, she used the pro longwearconcealer underneath my eyes and used a damp beauty blender to blend it.

(Affiliate links): Products used: Moonstone Becca Highlighter, NYX Wonder Stick, Mac Pro longwear Concealer, Marc Jacobs Foundation, NYX Liquid Illuminator, Laura Mercier setting powder

Tip #3: Use the NYX Wonderstick to contour. THIS IS A GAME CHANGER! This made contouring soooo much easier for me. Now that it is as simple as grabbing the stick, I contour my nose ( like in the pic above) everyday!

Once she blended the contour in, she then used the Laura Mercier setting powder to set my foundation and the concealerunder my eyes.

Then she used this gorgeous Bobbi Brown Blush in the shade, Nectar and highlighted right above my cheekbones with Becca Highlighter in the shade Moonstone.

Eyes:

Tip #4: Shimmer eye shadows tend to get all over the place, so if you wet your brush with a setting spray or even just a couple drops of water it will make the shimmery colors transfer to your eye without as much fallout on your face.

Jessica used the Urban Decay eye shadow primer on my lids first. Then used Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadows (left to right): Hot Chocolate, pink champagne, and comfort. Pink Champagne was used as the shimmer lid color. She finished off the look with this beautiful bronze shimmer eyeliner from Lance in the shade brown riche.

Tip #5: Use a nude eyeliner in your waterline to make you look more awake and brighten up your eyes. She used this NYX wonder pencil in the shade light.

She used the Brow Wiz in the shade Caramel and then used the brow gel to “set” my eyebrows and prevent them from moving.

Tip #6: Try Individual lashes! (She used the Ardell Short Black Individual lashes here) They looked so natural, but made my lashes have so much more volume. The best part, was that you don’t even realize they are there. Jessica said to start by putting a coat of mascara on your lashes. Then apply the lashes starting from the outside and work your way in. She said it typically takes 4 to 5 pieces. Let the eye lash glue sit for a minute or so and get “tacky” then use twizzers to apply close to your lash line.

LIPS:

She used the Jordana lip liner in the shade, Rock N Rose, then used Honey Love lipstick, and topped off with Oyster Girl Lipglass just in the center of the cupid’s bow to enhance and make my lips look fuller.

Thank you so much, Jessica, for the beautiful makeup! If you are in the Houston area and need a makeup artist, definitely contact her! She also shares tips and products on her instagram that is totally worth checking out.

We all need that time to decompress and relax!I am easing my way into this new lifestyle with more bubble baths and face masks that I picked up from Lush in Market Street – The Woodlands. (Seriously one of my favorite stores!) I tried some new things, that I am excited to share with y’all today!

I bought several of the bath bombs and bubble bars from Lush and since I am a person that loves pretty things, I put them in a cute apothecary jar to display them. These bath bombs are AMAZING. They smell so good and one bath bomb and can be broken into 4-5 pieces ( depending on the size) so they last for multiple uses.

Truthfully, I bought this Karma Bubble Bar because of the gold shimmer on top! haha! They also had a unicorn horn and a hot pink flamingo that were too cute.

I also picked up the milky bath bubble bar and this pink bath bomb. The pink bath bomb was filled with little hearts!

Seriously, how cute is that little robot?! I am such a sucker for cute designs. I bought this and then looked it up on Lush’s website and it is actually meant for kiddo’s, but it can be used for adults too haha! It has lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood and is great to use before bed to whind down.lush, beauty, beauty favorites, bubble bath, skincare, face masks, beauty routine, give yourself permission to slow down, relax, me time,

I usually read a book and put on a face mask while soaking in a bubble bath! These are my favorites right now.

Let’s talk face masks! I have used the Mask of Magnamity for years and it is a staple in my skincare routine. This mask is awesome for drawing out debris and oil from your pores and is very deep cleaning. This past month I branched out and also tried the Fresh Face Masks. They actually have to be kept in the fridge, which made the maskvery refreshing. I have been trying out The Sacred Truth mask, which is meant for dry or mature skin. It is very moisturizing, but the smell was a little too intense for me. I did really like the way my skin felt, but I plan on trying the Oatifixmask next instead. The Love Lettuce mask is great for all skin types and exfoliates and cleans, but in my opinion is not as intense as the mask of magnanimity.

I rotated these three masks each week for the last month and have loved how my skins has looked!

Okay,I will be honest, this is probably the best impulse purchase I have made in awhile. Whyyyyy did I go all winter without lip scrub?! This stuff is SO good and after I use the scrub, I use the Buttered Brazils lip balm. ( I really like the way they both smell!)

My Mom went with me to Lush and I bought us both one of these Pearl lotion massage bars. She won’t stop talking about how much she loves it! I know exactly what to get her for Mother’s Day this year. It smells divine. I like to use this before I go to bed, because it is a little too thick of a lotion for me to wear during the daytime.

So, if you need a reminder ( like I did) that it is okay to give yourself permission to slow down – then here it is! Even if that is just carving out an extra 15 minutes a week for you to take a bubble bath or put on a face mask, start setting some time for yourself! I am slowly learning that if I don’t take sometime for myself, then all the other areas of my life suffer and that is okay to slow down!

What are some of the ways you relax and take time for yourself? Also, I would also love any face mask recommendations that you have 🙂

Thank you to Market Street – The Woodlands for sponsoring this post! Opinions are always 100% my own.

PS: I have to give a shout out to Alana at the Lush store in Market Street. She was beyond wonderful. They have a ton of masks and products and she took the time to go over them with me and help me pick out what would be best for my skin!

I am so thankful for these two girls! As you grow older, friendships are hard to come by. It isn’t as easy as it used to be when we were in high school and college and you were surrounded by your friends every day. When you find your #squad – the people in your life who love you, encourage you, and dream with you it takes effort and work to keep those relationships, but it is so worth it.

I honestly hadn’t celebrated Galentine’s before thisand now I am wondering whyyyyyy not?!I mean, a holiday that you get to get all dolled up in cute dresses, go tobrunch, hang out, drink champagne, have sweets or even schedule a photoshoot with your girls – count me in every year!

friends, friendship, valentine's, galentine's, vday, community, blogger, squad, tribe, francesca's, valentine's dress ideas, red lace dress for valentine's,

As much as I love makingGalentine’s a big celebration with my gal pals, I also think we should strive to celebrate our friends all year long. I know with work and family etc. friendships tend to be the thing that gets shoved off to the side. So, I wanted to share a couple ways I try ( again, try – I am not perfect and totally am the first to admit, I can get too wrapped up in what I have going on in my own life) and celebrate my friendships during the year even with a busy schedule.

 1. Mani/pedi – Anytime I go get my nails done, I always send a quick text to a friend to see if they are in as desperate need as I am. I know not all of your friends may live close by, but at least the ones that do, I try and just see if they have a free hour. Knocks something off my to-do list and I get to relax and chat with a friend!
 2. Coffee Dates- It is no secret, I love coffee and coffee shops. So, if I have a morning or an evening I need to get a couple things done and am going to go to Starbucks, I send out a no pressure text to let them know I’ll be at the bucks if they wanna stop by and hang out or even work! ( Helps that these two girls are also bloggers, which means there is always something to be done and it is nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of!)
 3. Brunch- Even if it is just once a month or every two months – set up a brunch with your girlfriends. Try a new place or go to an old favorite, whatever it maybe you will always leave feeling so fulfilled.
 4. Girl’s night-I need to plan another one! My last one was so much fun. In December some of the girls came over and we made Christmas bows ( here is a video of how to do one, you can actually use it for any occasion and not just Christmas!) So grab a bottle of wine or even these Cotton Candy Cocktails and have a fun girl’s night!
 5. Snail Mail- This is great for the friends you can’t see all the time, but really want them to know you are thinking of them! I need to start doing this again. Last year, I made a goal to sit down and send out a couple cards once a month to family and friends.
 6. Set Reminders- I try and set reminders in my phone when I know a friend has something important going on in their life. Whether it is a birthday, stressful meeting with their boss, ultrasound appointment etc. anytime they mention something like that to me, I try and write it down and set a reminder to touch base with them and to pray for whatever it is.
 7. Be encouraging-A little encouragment goes a long way. Even if you don’t understand what your friend is going through, would have handled a situation differently, or maybe they have a dream that you just can’t even begin to understand. Despite whatever you are feeling about it, be that person that can be happy and encouraging for them and take an interest in your friend’s lives!
