I went with two different napkins and mix and matched with the stripes and a solid.

I honestly hadn’t planned on redoing my table for Spring, but back in December I returned Christmas plates ( my sweet Meme surprised me with the cutest puppy Christmas plates and I actually had just bought them for myself! Total proof that we are basically the same person and I get all my décor style from my 91 year old great grandmother! haha!) Anyways, that was a long way of saying that I had a gift card left over from the return and when I went into Pier 1, I saw these little bunny plates! Next thing I know, I am changing my entire table décor for Spring!

You may still be able to find these plates in your local store. They are no longer online, but I also love these, which are more colorful and not as muted and these are more traditional!

I found this little guy at Michael’s! How cute is he?! When it came to the centerpiece, I kept it really simple by using a white pitcher filled with pink tulips. Then I put him next to it and added the grapevine carrots. Tip: When decorating the middle of the table with multiple things, I like to use 3 objects that are all different heights. You could also just use the flowers and that would have been plenty!

I found this moss bunny years ago and just stuck it down into the centerpiece! He kind of blends in, but it was just a cute extra little detail!

It has been partially completed for months but over the weekend wecleaned, organized, hung pictures, and hung shelves all to FINALLY get my office finished. Woohooo! Now I finally have a creative place to write posts, plan, andto have a little “me” time to read. I wanted to give you the official tour and share some of my tips for creating a place you will love to be in!

Lindsey’s Office Tour

Tip # 1 – Have an area for you to unwind. A place that you can do things that bring you joy.

For me that space is my big comfy chair! I LOVE this reading nook. I love sitting in it with a great cup of coffee and a book or sometimes if I wake up before John on a Saturday I’ll go curl up in it with a blanket, my pups, and the ipad to watch Netflix. To have such a large chair in this space I had to sacrifice fitting a side table next to it. I found this old shelf in the garage, painted it gold, and it ended up being perfect to hold my coffee!

Tip #2 – Pick colors you love.

I really wanted a clean and bright space. While this to me is cozy and relaxing, this room also doubles as our “studio” and the white walls help for when we shoot diy projects, decor, and recipes.

Tip #3 – Have a workspace that inspires creativity and productivity.

When you keep a clean desk then you are more likely to do work there, where as if you keep it cluttered then you will avoid it, because in order for you to work you will need to deal with whatever is on that desk and so you just go somewhere else. I also like to keep things in view that encourage and motivate me, so above the desk I created a gallery wall of inspirational sayings and quotes. PS: This desk is from Ikea. I think total it was under $30! I used my trusty old spray paint and painted the legs gold. I try not to keep a lot on it and store most of my stuff on the bookshelf, because we are constantly moving this thing in front of the window to take the pictures for our blog posts. Luckily, it is super lightweight and easy to move!

This clothes rack is also from Ikea and was around $13 when I bought it a month or two ago. This has become one of my favorite purchases! It is so nice to have one place to hang outfits and store products that haven’t been shot for the blog yet.

I just picked up 3 of these gold baskets from Walmart! They were less than $2 a piece. I am definitely going back for more. They fit perfectly inside the bookcase and on the bottom of the clothes rack for storage.

Tip #4 -Create a Gallery Wall

I love the gallery wall above my desk. I chose pieces that would be motivating and encouraging. If you want to create your own gallery wall, first, you are going to want a plan of how many items that you want to put up and how you want them spaced out on the wall. I just laid them out on the floor and arranged them how I wanted keeping in mind, that nothing should be perfectly centered. I used a variety of size pictures and added more interesting pieces like the deer and moose head. (Most of the pictures and decor are from Hobby Lobby. )

Second, you need a way to mount them on the wall and if you are like me then you hate using the hammer and nails, because you have to find the studs and then if you mess up they leave a huge hole. To much pressure haha. Well, HelpyHook is about to be your new best friend! Seriously, this may look like a tiny, cute little hook – but this bad boy can hold up to 17lbs!! Sayyyy whhhhha? I was shocked too. I have become a little addicted and used these to hang just about everything in my office…and rehung things that were already hung in the house, just because haha!

PS: how cute is the packaging?! I love the little container and there are a ton of hooks in there. Sidenote: they are also reusable.

Let me tell you how easy the Helpy Hooks are to use: You line it up, then use your thumb (that’s right I said thumb, not hammer) to effortlessly push the hook into the wall. Ta-da! That is it! If you need to remove the hook, you can take another helpyhook and hook the middle ridge with it and it will pull it right out of the wall.

Tip #5 – Add Decor and Accents

Add in little things like scented candles, flowers, and other nic-nacs that help tie the room together.

Thank you so much for stopping by to take a look at my office. I hope some of the tips will help you in creating a space you will love to be in too! I would love to see pictures, tag me on instagram @ourmessytable.

Hope you love the lemon and mixed pattern trend as much as we are in my Summer Home Tour 2016!

Summer Home Tour 2016

When we moved into our new house last year, I got this crazy notion that none of my “stuff” went with our new house! ( yeah, John wasn’t too thrilled about that!) But it was time for a change. Home tours have been so much fun this year, because I have gotten the chance to start over for each season. When starting over for a season, I always look for a focal point that is going to be my “theme.” I literally squealed with joy when I saw these lemon plates! They ended up being the inspiration for all my Summer decor.

I love the lemon plates and ceramic lemon, it will never go out-of-style!

This gorgeous striped bowl can be used in the kitchen, coffee table, or on your dining room table! I filled it with lemons. However, when we entertain, I will probably fill it with snacks!

I love incorporating older pieces that have been passed down from my great grandmother ( who may I add, is still fabulous at 91!) I swear she has better fashion style and home decor now than I ever will! She gave me the blue willow vase on the left and I will cherish it always. She has had it for many, many years and I love that the blue willow is back in style now! I also love this frame and mirror from Michael’s! They were a total find and can be used season after season!

I am a sucker for an old window and this boxwood wreath just MADE it! Plus adding the bright, tassel pillows gave it that pop of color I was looking for! Sometimes, it can be hard to incorporate bright colors with a more “fixer upper” feel style. These pillows were just the right amount of color for that area.

It has been so dreary and rainy in Houston this week. You may have seen on the news all the flooding and awfulness that has been going on. We were very blessed to be in an area that did not sustain any flood damage and we have been avoiding going into the city to steer clear of all that. With all the gloomy weather, I decided to put together a bright & cheery list of things I am currently loving: Pineapple Perfection!

Right now I am currently loving all things pineapple! It started this weekend when I picked up an adorable pineapple cookie jar and I have been spiraling ever since ( luckily almost everything is one sale!) Here’s some of my other favorite pineapple pieces.

I love the new, the fresh, the clean, all of it. I also enjoy the chance to decorate our house again and give it a new look. If you are in need of some Spring decor inspiration or just want to see what we have going on over at the Lyons' house then this post is for you. ]]> Happy Spring, Y’all! I love to decorate the house for Spring. Life lately has been so chaotic (I’m sure many of y’all can relate!) So, I tried to stick to a minimal, clean, and fresh look. Something that won’t overwhelm me when I get home from a busy day! Here’s a look at our Spring Home Tour 2016!

I have mentioned this in earlier posts, but when we bought our new home this past Summer, I completely changed the color scheme in our house. Since then I have been collecting metal pieces, birchwood, cream & distressed decor. I have been trying to stick with those main staple pieces for every season, which saves me money, because I can reuse the same pieces in new ways each season. (Instead of buying a bunch of decor that I can only use once a year.) I did however, splurge on a couple bunnies for Easter, but for the most part – everything I got can be repurposed for each season.)

We use our coffee table all the time. So, lately I have been choosing simple centerpieces that won’t get messed up if we keep moving them around.

This candlestick goes with EVERYTHING. I like that it adds a little shimmer and breaks up the distressed pieces I have in the living room. & this metal tray has been used for SO many things. This is going to sound dramatic, but I would put it at the top of my best purchases of the year. It was so cheap and I have used it for other centerpieces& at a bridal shower to hold drinks.

This project is incredibly simple, just find some letters from Michael’s Art Supply and then paint them to match the wall that you want them to hang on. Once they are dry simply glue them to the wall. I suggest using a level to mark the wall first to give yourself a nice straight line – otherwise it may look like you did this project after that 4th glass of wine 😉

Fall Home Tour – Metal, Cream, & Grapevine http://www.ourmessytable.com/fall-home-tour-metal-cream-grapevine/ http://www.ourmessytable.com/fall-home-tour-metal-cream-grapevine/#respond Tue, 24 Nov 2015 23:05:27 +0000 http://www.ourmessytable.com/?p=547 This year on a whim I decided to completely change my typical fall color scheme of warm tone oranges, browns, and maroons & instead channeled my inner Joanna Gaines by incorporating metal pumpkins, an old window, wood and a ton of grapevine. Oh and lots of cotton! Seriously, there could never be enough cotton. Then I finished the look off with little touches of silver throughout. Here's a look at my 2015 Fall Home Tour!]]> I realize this post should have been up a month ago and that by now everyone is already thinking about Christmas decorations ( which I am too, believe me!) but since it is still November for a couple more days, I thought I would go ahead and share my Fall Décor before I put it all away.

This year on a whim I decided to completely change my typical fall color scheme of warm tone oranges, browns, and maroons and instead channeled my inner Joanna Gaines ( if you don’t know who this is after you read this post – stop everything your doing and go watch, Fixer Upper, on Netflix asap- you will thank me later LOL!) by incorporating metal pumpkins, an old window, wood and a ton of grapevine. Oh and lots of cotton! Seriously, there could never be enough cotton. Then finished the look off with little touches of silver throughout.

Here’s a look at my 2015 Fall Home Tour:

Mantle:

I think the mantle was my favorite part this year. We haven’t had a mantle in a couple years and I forgot how much fun it is to decorate it!

IMG_9204.JPG

(Excuse the dirty fire place, it is on my to-do list!)

IMG_9175.JPG

John made the Acts 2:46 Sign for me out of an old window. It has become one of my all time favorite pieces.

IMG_9181.JPG

The wood stumps are from Michael’s Art Supply and by adding the raccoon on top, it just made the little guy stand out so much more!

IMG_9179.JPG

My favorite “find” of the season was this metal pumpkin. This is the piece that tied everything together. I originally saw this pumpkin at a high- end design shop and couldn’t justify spending the money on it. Then a couple days later, I found the exact same pumpkin at Hobby Lobby and of course it was cheaper and was 50% off! (Don’t get betta than that!) So, needless to say – this pumpkin came home with me and has been sitting here being gorgeous ever since.

Tip: I wanted the cream pumpkin to sit up higher, so we took a candle holder and put the pumpkin on top of it. You can also use clear bowls and glassware to do the same thing! You will never even notice it, but it helps add dimension. Especially if you use this technique on an entryway table or on top of a cabinet or entertainment center and use greenery, garland, or ribbon to hide it.

Entertainment Center:

IMG_9189.JPG IMG_9184.JPG IMG_9187.JPG IMG_9193.JPG

My mom uses grapevine in all her decorations and this year she taught me an awesome trick! She buys a grapevine wreath and cuts the pieces that hold the wreath together. Be sure to do it outside – it gets messy! Then grab one end and have someone pull it out away from you and it will stretch into this really pretty twig, curly vine. Then you can break it into sections to make it easier to decorate with. I had enough from one $5 wreath from Michael’s Art Supply to use in all my Fall decorating. It can be a little hard to work with, so just be patient. You may have to drape and reposition it several times to get it to look the way that you want it too.

Inside the cubbies of the entertainment center:

IMG_9183.JPG IMG_9188.JPG IMG_9186.JPG

To fill those random spaces, I bought a couple signs from Hobby Lobby and Home Goods, used leftover cotton and put it in a glass jar, and filled a basket with extra pumpkins that I had.

Coffee Table:

IMG_9206.JPG

Entryway Table:

IMG_9200.JPG IMG_9201.JPG

IMG_9207.JPG
One thing I love about this using metals, creams, and grapevine is that so much of my decorations can be used all year long. All I have to do is trade out the pumpkins and cotton for other seasonal items.

I hope you enjoyed my first Home Tour on the blog! Tonight, I will be packing it all up and starting to put out Christmas Décor. So, stay tuned for my Christmas Home Tour post soon!

Thanks for stopping by!

DIY Industrial Shelves Tutorial

how to make industrial shelves

Getting started: Surprisingly you will find that this will be the hardest step in this process. First you will need to measure the wall that you will be building your shelves on and determine the size of your shelving. Then you will need to design and layout what you want your shelves to look like. Don’t worry if you aren’t an artist, just sketch out a rough idea and keep this with you when you go to get supplies because it helps. So what I did was just draw out what I wanted my shelves to look like and color coded the different parts ( my mind just works better this way.) I designed my shelves to be able to fit a desk underneath it on the left side. As you design your shelves keep in mind that the piping has standard sizes (6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36) that it comes in and if you deviate ( which is ok for you rebels who hate conformity,) then you can have someone at Lowes cut/thread the pipes for a small charge of course.

* I recommend going to Lowes for this project. I found that Lowes had a better supply than Home Depot and it’s pipe area was better organized. I don’t receive anything from Lowes, I just had a better experience there on this particular project.

Tips for construction: The pipe-shelving frame is only connected horizontally by the wood shelving. Mine is attached at the wall near the ceiling and on the left side above my desk. You can anchor the piping to the floor if you would like but I found that it is really sturdy once you piece it all together.

The front of each board has a hole drilled in it to line up with the corresponding piping. And each board is supported by resting on a “T” connector in the front and an “elbow” connector in the back. The simplicity here is that the wood shelf doesn’t need to be nailed or screwed down in any way and will be held in place by the piping itself.

Vertical: For me, drawing it out and color-coding the different pipes and connectors made adding up the measurements much easier.Start by just rounding all the connectors to an even number of 2 inches. Those connectors are your flanges, “T”, and elbows. The wood shelving thickness does not come into play because the piping goes thru it and so it doesn’t add to the height of the unit. On my drawing, starting with the bottom of the shelving unit, I drew in the flanges and the number 2 for 2″. Then, because I wanted to fit my art cart underneath it, I knew my first shelf needed to be above that. I drew in the 36″ pipes. Then a “T”(2 inches), then my next pipe length 12″, another “T” (2 inches), 12″ pipe, another “T” (2 inches), 12″ pipe, another 2″ “T”, a 12″ pipe and a 2″ elbow to finish it. Adding those up, my rough shelving unit height measured at 114”. This number wont be exact for a variety of reasons such as the varying heights of flanges, “T”s, elbows and pipe threads when assembling. Just give yourself a little grace to work with.

Horizontal: My wood shelves are 10″ deep. As shown in the photo above, in the front the shelving rests on 3-way “T”s, in the back, it rests on an upturned 90-degree elbow. I chose 6″ pipes for connecting the horizontal 3-way “T” to the upturned elbow. (Because the tee sits 1″ in on the 10″ shelf, measures 2″, then 6″ pipe, then a 1″ elbow totaling 10 inches. This gives my shelf the full support it needs and also keeps it away from the wall.

Before you shop: Make a list of plumbing supplies by counting up each “T”, pipe, elbow and flange and mark it on your sketch to take with you.

Materials:

* All of my pipes and fittings are ½ inch.

 • (4) 1 x 10 x 8
 • (1) bottle of pipe cleaner
 • (1) qt of wood stain
 • (1) qt of sealer
 • (8) flanges
 • (21) 90 degree elbows
 • (15) “T”s
 • (2) 36” pipes
 • (17) 12” pipes
 • (21) 6” pipes
 • Box of screws and wall anchors

Lets build these DIY Industrial Shelves already!

The Pipes: First thing was to get the pipes ready. We had to clean off the pipes and remove all the stickers. (This part sucks but just tough it out.) We used a strong degreaser spray and old shirts to strip the pipes down. Once that was done we set the pipes off to the side for now. If you would like this would be a good time to paint the pipes if you choose to, we didn’t because I liked the look of the pipes already.

The Wood: We only had to cut 2 of our 4 wood boards. Our design has a tiered look to it so that my desk can fit underneath it. So we measured the length on those boards and made our cuts. One board was cut down to 5’ and the other was cut into (2) 3’ boards.

Next decide where you want the holes for your pipes to run through. The edges were easy but the middle 2 holes took planning. The holes at each end were close to the edge and 1 inch from the sides. (If you go with the ½ inch pipe size then use a 7/8 hole saw bit so that your connector won’t fit through the holes). When planning out your holes, consider where your studs are and how symmetrical the spacing of your pipe looks on each shelf. Once we cut the holes for the first 8‘ board we just used it as the template for the rest of the boards. After all the holes were drilled we sanded all of the boards to prep them for staining and sealing.

Staining and sealing both sides of each wood shelf is the most time consuming part of the project. This was my first time to stain wood but I just followed the instructions and they turned out great. Don’t forget the edges and inside of the holes too. I used a few foam brushes to apply the stain and you will want to have rubber gloves and lots of rags. Once the stain has dried you will want to apply the polyurethane to the boards. The will give your shelves some protection. I only applied 2 coats so that it didn’t give it a very shiny look. Again just follow the directions on the can.

Time for assembly!

This part is easy and exciting! We started by assembling the right side of our shelves because that is the side where the legs will actually touch the ground. First, we attached the bottom flanges to our bottom 36” leg pipes and then added a “T” to each one. Make sure to have your horizontal “T” opening facing the wall. Next, we attached a 12” pipe onto the top of the “T” and a 6” pipe on the horizontal part of the “T” facing the wall. To the 6” pipe I added a 90-degree elbow connector. You will want the elbows to face for so that the shelves can rest on them.

Don’t mind the tape, this was before I degreased them. I just wanted to test the assembly.

After we assembled the leg pieces, we added our first shelf by placing the holes over the piping and resting it on top of the “T” and elbow connectors. Then just continue to build the shelves in this way.

Again this was a test run before we stained the wood or cleaned the pipes.

Since our tiered design didn’t allow us to connect the other two pipes to the floor we had to start those sides by attaching a flange to the wall, then a 6″ pipe and an elbow. From there you just build upward in the same way as the rest of the shelf. (Its key that the flanges be drilled into a stud because this side will hold the weight of your shelving).

The Top:The finishing touch is securing the shelving unit. After the last shelf is in place, add the last vertical lengths of pipe. Add an elbow to each one. Add a flange to each horizontal pipe piece and thread into the elbow. The flange should be touching the wall (threads will allow for adjusting). Drill the flange into the wall. If there isn’t a stud then you will need to use wall anchors.

Notice how the shelves sit on top of the “T” and the elbow.

That’s it. Now its time to decorate and add life to your new DIY Industrial Shelves. As you can see I have plenty to add to my office shelves.

Good Luck and please don’t hesitate to ask questions. Also this is my first post ever so I would love some feedback on what I could do better next time or what would be more helpful to add in the instructions. Thanks for stopping by.
